It’s clear skies for the new cloud. Amazon Web Services has launched its Thailand-based Asia-Pacific cloud region, an expansion of its global digital infrastructure, which it said will add $10 billion to Thailand’s economy and create over 11,000 jobs.
The cloud region is one part of Amazon Web Service’s (AWS) $5 billion investment in the Kingdom. The company first opened an office in Bangkok in 2013 and has been investing and expanding in Thailand ever since.
“The new AWS Region will help startups, enterprises, government agencies, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations run their applications and serve end users while maintaining data residency in Thailand,” wrote Donnie Prakoso, Principal Developer Advocate at AWS, on the company’s website. “This aligns with Thailand’s digital transformation goals and the growing demand for cloud services.”
As part of those goals, Thailand has been courting and receiving substantial investments in data centers and cloud infrastructure by tech companies from a variety of regions. Along with Amazon, Google and Microsoft, the Board of Investment said last November it had approved 47 projects for data centers and cloud infrastructure.
Digital industries are a priority sector in Thai policymakers’ plans to upgrade the Kingdom’s economy to a level that is more technologically advanced and environmentally friendly. The Board of Investment has created a menu of generous incentives for companies involved in digital industries.
“Over the next 15 years, Amazon Web Services’ planned investments in Thailand are estimated to contribute $10 billion to Thailand’s gross domestic product and support an estimated average of 11,000 full-time equivalent jobs in local Thai businesses annually,” Prakoso wrote.
