MARRIAGE REGISTRATION

Criteria:

Marriage registration at the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul is permitted only for marriages between two Thai nationals

or between a Thai national and a foreign national. The registration is recognized as a legal marriage under Thai law.

1. Qualifications for Marriage Registration

1. Individuals who are 20 years old may register their marriage independently. Individuals who are over 17 but under

20 years of age must obtain consent from a parent or legal guardian, applicants may visit the Embassy together with

their parents and sign a consent form in person or they may  present the official consent form signed by parents on the day

of application. Individuals under 17 years of age must obtain court approval in order to legally register a marriage.

2. Applicants must not be mentally incapacitated or legally incompetent.

3. Applicants must not currently be married to another individual.

4. Both parties must not be siblings sharing the same father and mother, or the same father or mother.

5. An adoptive parent is prohibited from marrying their adopted child.

6. A woman whose previous marriage has ended for any reason may register a new marriage only after a minimum of

    310 days has passed since the termination of the previous marriage.

 

2. Procedures for Marriage Registration

Marriage Registration Appointment Reservation

From 5 January 2026 onwards, the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul will provide marriage registration services only to applicants who have made an advance online appointment.

The Thai national spouse is required to make the appointment in advance via https://cas.consular.go.thApplicants may check or change their appointment date through https://cas.consular.go.th using the reservation number sent to the registered email address.

(Only one party is required to make the reservation; it is not necessary for both parties to register.)

Marriage Registration Procedures

1. After successfully completing the appointment reservation, prior to visiting the Embassy the couple is advised to submit photos or scanned copies of all required documents for marriage registration in advance for preliminary examination by the officer via email at [email protected]

2. The couple must visit the Embassy on the reserved date and time to sign and receive marriage certificate in person.
On the day of service, the couple must be accompanied by two witnesses. Each witness is required to present a valid Thai identification card along with 1 copy.

3. If all submitted documents are complete and correct, the couple will be able to receive the marriage certificate on the same day, between 14:00 and 15:00 p.m.

Steps On The Registration Date

1. Please contact the Legalisation Section on the 2nd floor of the Consular Building to report your arrival and receive the application form from the officer.

2. The couple must complete the application form together. Once completed, please submit the application form along with all required documents and the witnesses’ documents to the Legalisation Section officers.

3. The officer will issue the documents, and the couple and the witnesses must sign the original marriage registration paper together in the presence of the officer.

4. The marriage certificate may be collected on the same day between 14:00 and 15:00 hours.

 

3.Required Documents for Marriage Registration Application

Applicants may receive the Marriage Registration application form from the legalisation officers at the Embassy

3.1 For Thai Nationals:

1. Original Thai national ID card (valid or expired) and one copy.
 or

2. Original Thai passport (valid or expired) and one copy

3. Certified copy of any name/surname change certificate (if applicable)

4. Original Single Status Certificate in Thai – required only for individuals previously married and legally divorced

5. Certified copy of previous divorce certificate – required only for individuals previously married and legally divorced

6. Certified copy of death certificate – required if the previous marriage ended due to the spouse’s death

 

3.2 For South Korean Nationals

1. Original valid passport and one copy

2. Original English version of the Korean Household Registration Certificate (Yeongmun Jumin Deungnok Deungbon)

3. Original English version of the Korean Family Relation Certificate (Yeongmun Gajok Gwangye Jeungmyeongseo)

4. Certified copy of previous divorce certificate – required only for individuals previously married and legally divorced

5. Death certificate or other relevant documents – required only if the previous marriage ended due to the spouse’s death

Note:

  • For items 2 and 3

      - If issued in English directly by Korean authorities (e.g., Jumin Center or District Office), no additional authentication

        by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea is required.

  • For items 4 and 5

      - If issued in Korean, the documents must be translated into English and legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of

        Korea.

     - Only documents legalised within the past 3 months are accepted.

 

3.3 For Foreign Nationals Other Than Thai or South Korean

1. Original valid passport and one copy

2. Proof of residence in South Korea or country of birth

3. Original Single Status Certificate (issued within the last 3 months)

4. Family relations certificate or birth certificate that clearly stating the names of parents

5. Certified copy of divorce certificate or – if applicable

6. Death certificate or other relevant documents – if applicable

Note

  • For documents 2–6

        - If the original documents are in English, no further translation is required.

       - If the documents are in a language other than English, they must be translated into English and the translation must

         be certified by the embassy or Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that country.

       - All documents must be legalised by the respective country’s embassy in South Korea or by the Ministry of Foreign

         Affairs of that country and by the Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate in that country.

         (Apostille documents are not accepted.)

       - Only documents legalised within the past 3 months are accepted.

       - Proof of residence may be an official document showing both full name and address of the applicant,

         such as a house registration, lease contract, driver’s license, tax payer document, or utility bill.

※ The Royal Thai Embassy reserves the right to request additional documents without prior notice

 

4.Fees  There is no fee for the marriage registration

 

5. Additional Information

Registration of Family Status (Kor ror.22) – In Case of Marriage Under Korean Law

Criteria:

If the couple has already registered their marriage under Korean law, it is not possible to register the marriage again under

Thai law again. Instead, they may apply to record their marital status through the “Registration of Family Status (Kor ror.22)”

process.

 

Required Documents for Family Status Registration (Kor ror.22):

1. Korean marriage certificate (혼인관계증명서)

2. Korean family relation certificate (가족관계증명서)

3. A copy of the South Korean spouse’s passport

Note

District offices in Thailand may request additional documents. Please directly contact the relevant district office in advance

for confirmation.

 

Procedure of registration at the local district office in Thailand:

1. Translate the Korean marriage certificate and family relation certificate into English.

    (If the family relation certificate can be issued in English, only the marriage certificate need to be translated.)

2. Legalise the documents at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea (외교부).

3. Legalise documents by the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul.

4. Translate the documents into Thai upon arrival in Thailand.

5. Legalize the Thai translations at the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.

6. Submit all documents to the preferred district office in Thailand to update the family status in the civil registry.

    The district office will issue a “Kor ror.22 – Registration of Family Status” document.

Note

If the applicant is unable to return to Thailand in person, a Power of Attorney can be issued at the Royal Thai Embassy

in Seoul authorizing a representative in Thailand to update the status on their behalf.
