On 24 January 2026, H.E. Mr. Tanee Sangrat, Ambassador of Thailand to the ROK, and representatives from the Thai Association and community in the ROK, held discussions with Mr. Chai Nakhonchai, Election Commissioner and his delegation, to exchange views and follow up on the progress of the management of the overseas general election and constitutional referendum in the ROK.
Both sides discussed and exchanged information on operational procedures, as well as challenges, issues, and obstacles related to the organization of the election and referendum. These included voter registration, overall administrative management, the sorting and handling of envelopes containing ballot papers for the election and referendum, the management of returned ballot papers from voters, and ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance with relevant laws and regulations at every stage of the process.
In addition, Mr. Chai Nakhonchai, Election Commissioner, together with his delegation, conducted an inspection and monitoring visit of the overseas election and referendum operations at the polling station within the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul, as well as the postal voting process, on 24 January 2026. The delegation also visited the mobile polling unit at Wat Buddharangsee in Hwaseong City on 25 January 2026, in order to ensure that the election and referendum were conducted smoothly, accurately, and efficiently.
The Royal Thai Embassy has implemented all three voting methods, polling at the Embassy, postal voting, and mobile polling units, to provide Thai nationals in the ROK with the widest possible range of options suitable to their individual circumstances. This marks the first time that Thai nationals in the ROK have been able to exercise their voting rights via postal voting. A total of 6,976 Thai nationals registered to vote in the general election, while 4,529 registered to participate in the constitutional referendum, placing the ROK as the sixth highest country worldwide in terms of overseas voter registration. As of 25 January 2026, nearly 3,500 voters in the ROK have already exercised their rights in the election and referendum.
