On 18 May 2026, H.E. Mr. Tanee Sangrat, Ambassador of Thailand to the ROK, met with Mr. Cha Yongho, Commissioner of the Korea Immigration Service, to advance cooperation on immigration affairs and the protection and welfare of Thai nationals in the ROK.
The two sides discussed a number of important issues, including:
1. The suspension of eligibility for seasonal agricultural and fisheries workers (E-8 visa holders) from four provinces in Thailand
2. The declining trend in the number of Thai nationals residing illegally in the ROK
3. Implementation of the Voluntary return program
4. Modification of the K-ETA system to enhance screening procedures and reduce entry denials for Thai nationals holding valid K-ETA authorization
5. The protection of the human rights of Thai workers and assistance in cases involving serious physical assaults against Thai workers by Korean employers, including injuries caused by air guns
6. Enhanced caution and safety measures in operations against illegal employment, as well as the prevention of workplace accidents
7. The adjustment of minimum wage rates for semi-skilled workers (E-7-2) and skilled workers (E-7-3) to ensure appropriateness
8. The expansion of quotas for Thai workers, broader employment sectors for Thai labor, and support for visa status changes from E-9 to E-7-4.
9. The establishment of a consultation mechanism between the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul and the Korea Immigration Service, with meetings to be held at least twice a year.
The Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul places the highest importance on the protection and well-being of Thai nationals in the Republic of Korea, including workers, students, businesspersons, and residents. The Embassy remains committed to proactively strengthening cooperation with Korean government agencies, civil society organizations, and Thai community networks to promote the quality of life, well-being, and safety of Thai nationals in all dimensions.
